In this section, SCAMPER tool will be used for illustration purposes.
The SCAMPER technique uses a set of directed questions which you answer about your probortunity in order to come up with ideas. The stimulus comes from forcing yourself to answer questions which you would not normally pose. The questions direct you to thinking about a probortunity in ways which typically come up with idea.
SCAMPER is an acronym which stands for Substitute, Adapt, Combine, Magnify or Minify, Put to other use, Eliminate and Reverse.
Get 2 unrelated objects and employ the above techniques to create ideas or contents for your website or blog.
Substitute – You can consider parts, materials, ingredients or process that could be possible for substitution. Above example shows that battery could be possible used to substitute for a laptop power supply.
Combine - What could be put together for a better or different result? Could we combine functions, purposes or services? Could we blend an assortment of things where there was only one? The above example shows the combination possibility of fort and knife when eating a pizza.
Adapt - Are there ideas from other industries or fields of study that we can use? Can we use ideas from the past? What other things resemble this? The above example show how the car industries adapted from military industries.
Magnify or Minify - What can you make larger, higher, longer, broader? What can you make smaller, lower, shorter or narrower?
Put to other use - What else can I use this product, service, etc for?
Eliminate - What part of this could I omit, subtract or delete? What could I reduce or streamline? What can I understate or ignore? The above example shows an iPhone whereby numeric buttons were eliminated.
Reverse - Would doing the opposite of what's expected be beneficial? What rules and assumptions can be reversed? The above example shows cash converter whereby the rule of the game has changed. The company give you cash to buy your products instead.
So, after knowing this brainstorm technique, how can I apply it into my website or blog.
Let me show you a specify example for creating web content employing some of the method. In this example, I used 2 unrelated areas - Magic and Tapes
And “Combine”, “Eliminate”, “Reverse” method taught…
Combine – “Magic” associate with magic performance, tricks and secrets while “Tapes” associate with video clips, etc. As such, I could create a website or blog houses all the magic performance, tricks or secrets from other popular video web sharing website (e.g. youtube, etc) or even create your own video clips.
In other word, by using “combine” method, I could have a website or blog showing videos on magic tricks, performance or secrets.
Eliminate – With the above ideas, I could use “Eliminate” method to get rid of all the instruction write up to perform a magic trick (i.e. since showing magic through video clips could be more self explanation)
Reverse – With that, I could use “Reverse” method to give away video clips free rather than selling these video clips. This will helps to generate traffic to your website or blog.
With the above knowledge, you could easily get some ideas for your website or blog. Do not stop only for one idea, you should try to get as many ideas as you can. We will further discuss how you could select the most profitable one at a later stage.
